Brief:
Create a piece of 2D art that demonstrates your understanding of Overactive Bladder (OAD) based on your reasearch from the sources provided, for a campaign designed to raise awareness of this condition and alert others to the impact it can have on individuals.
I was delighted to be selected to develop a piece of artwork for this public awareness campaign, for which I created the painting Disappear and I feel immensely proud to have been part of a project that allowed me to use my art to help and communicate with people who may be suffering in silence.

Disappear, 2012, oil and a broken mirror piece on canvas (30 x 40.5cm)
Artist comment: ‘Disappear’ represents those moments when we feel so overwhelmed by our concerns that we want to curl up and become invisible, so that we feel shielded and protected from our nightmare. The vast amount of black symbolises how we can become lost in thoughts when we feel our worries are consuming and restricting our lives. By using a distorted figure that doesn’t have any facial features, I hope to encourage the viewers to visualise themselves, whilst the small, broken mirror piece symbolises a single tear drop, emphasising how insignificant and desperate we can feel when we are at our lowest. However, the mirror piece also represents reflection and the ability to look back at life, creating a glimmer of hope signifying the notion that there is always a ‘light at the end of the tunnel’. |
